What kind of things suck you in and really get you into it? What attracts you to a band in the first place? What kind of things you like to see at live performances of bands/groups?

Does the band play well, and play songs I know and like? Is the crowd into it?

When I saw Rush at Shoreline this past summer, they were good, but the only song that the crowd really got into was The Spirit of Radio.

I saw Rush in Pittsburgh this last summer. Great time. I usually get some smokeables and that makes shows a more enjoyable time.

Also, knowing songs is awesome. I love sinning along.

the #1 thing I like when I go to a concert is hearing more than I'd hear just listening to the album at home... cover songs, interludes, etc are all a big :thumbsup: from me.

I like to hear a band "raw", without all the polished studio sound manipulation. I've seen bands that were mellow on the album, but just kicked your face in live. That energy really gets me into a show.

killer guitar solos. giant stacks. mad skills.

a sick lightshow if you're good. a short set if you're not.

Aside from music, the personality of the band/singer. I can't "love" a musician if they're retards or assholes.

When I went to the newly reformed New Kids on the Block concert last week, it was mostly the mosh pit that sucked me in... and Jordan's smile.

Quality interaction with the crowd. You can easily tell who cares and who doesn't
Oh, the chest vibrating speakers help

Knowing which venues have good acoustics helps too

ONSTAGE Dedication to the fans. In other words, ticket prices ain't cheap and it's good to see a band that doesn't mind giving them a show worth remembering.

A good example of this is Phish. I only made it to one of their shows and it was far from packed. But they started playing at 7:30pm and did 3, 2 hour sets with 20 minute breaks in-between. The people there were weird, but the music wasn't bad...the beer was cold. I'm sure the other patrons there were high on 20 different kinds of recreational drugs, but I enjoyed the show just fine with a beer buzz.

6 hours of play is definitely above and beyond most of the folks that let a few B bands open for them to play only an hour or an hour and a half. I mean, Phish opened for themselves. ;)

well seeing as how Phish is a band known for their long ass jams, it's not fair to say that other bands that play for an hour or an hour and a half not worthy.

Why make a movie 3 hours long if it can be just as good and finish in half the time?

I once saw RHCP throw on a 35 minute rendition of give it away (give it away + outro)

awesome.

I saw Dream Theater earlier in the year, and to be honest, it was a very mediocre show. The sound was not great - kick drum had no low end - and the mix was a bit off on instruments/vocals volume levels. Set list was weird, played none of my favorite songs. Drummer messed up in a critical part of a classic song, kinda buzz killed the audience getting into it. Not to mention their latest album is not one of their better ones. And my seats were not as good as the ticketmaster diagram appeared.

So for me, a concert is good if

* sound is mixed well, all instruments and vocals leveled correctly, and guitars are eq'd for heavy but not over-trebly
* band plays my favorite songs
* current album is good
* seats are decent

saw them @the gibson ampitheater. Had seats right next to the sound board, so sound was excellent. Dunno how into DT you are, but they have to know their entire catalogue every night! sounds pretty fucking impossible to me.

The lead singer butchered 2 verses when they played here as well. But I don't care about him. Mike Portney + Petrucci + that asian guy that only has 2 facial expressions = godly.

Not as good as tool live, but that's a different thread ;)

What sucks me in depends on the band because I like different bands for different reasons, but one thing that can completely ruin a show is badly balanced/mixed vocals. If I can't hear the singer I'm pissed.

Energy.

Emotional, physical, whatever.

and a connection with the audience. The really good performers get this and know how to do it.

being on the floor. i will never sit in the stands again. thats like watching the band on DVD. once you are on the floor once, you can never go back.

i also like bands that don't play their songs the exact way the are on the album. i like the improvisation or when a song is extended in concert.

Yeah, decent sound, improv, and some personality are key. I also like when a band does a really good cover; something that is not available on any album they have. It can really pump things up if done well, but of course it can really kill things if done poorly.

Hey, They Might Be Giants are playing downtown on March 1st, $22. Be there or be... not there.
