is it okay to ask for an explanation?

i didn't get a research thingy over the summer, and i want to talk to the prof to ask what part of my application was lacking... i'm not bitter or anything like that, i just want to know how to improve my application for things that i will apply to in the future... but is this a socially/professional acceptable question?
 
I think in that situation it would be okay. It would be a little weird to have an interview with some random company, and then ask why you didn't get the job after they sent you a rejection letter.
