When you get a "lube, oil, filter" service done, what is the "lube"?

I know you get an oil change and an oil filter, but what is the "lube" that you get?

It means they use KY before they bend you over...

Joints, suspension, and if you go to a quality place you should get your muffler bearing lubed too. Ask for it next time because some places refuse to do it.

Working at a dealership, we topped off fluids, rotated tires(every other change), and had a 29 point general inspection. I dont remember lubing anything. Of course at the dealership, we rarely if ever see a 1992 Ford Aspire or whatnot. The oldest car there i remember clearly was a 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis with 41k miles driven by an elderly couple. For the most part, only newer cars were really worth bringing in to the dealership because the're fords, a brake job icosts more than buying another 1994 fords.

On older cars, there were exposed areas that had to be routinely lubricated. Our 1992 Camaro is an example of this; tie rods, ball joints, swaybar bushings, door hinges, stuff like that needs to be lubricated.

On my 97 Subaru I don't think anything had to be lubricated.

Most newer cars don't have zerk fittings for a grease gun, as they are factory sealed for life. You no longer lube the balljoints and tie rod ends. They sometimes lube door hinges, latches, etc., but don't count on it.

Your wallet is what gets lubed for them to extract the money. :)

It's a holdover from a long time ago when a car's suspension joints were not permanently lubed and had zirk fittings that required lubing often. Lubing the zirk fittings was included in oil changes by most shops and the service became known as a "lube, oil, and filter change" service.
