Is that normal? :(

depends on credit.

I was lucky..otherwise i would've had to pay $300 deposit (!) for turning power/internet/cable on here in Jackson, TN.

Not always. My local power co doesn't care what your credit is like - they don't even check - you still gotta pay a deposit unless you have proof that you paid utilities before.

I wish they could check.. I wouldn't have had to pay a deposit then.

I didn't have to pay a deposit, but then again I have good credit and I pay my bills on time. I also work for my power company. :D

Nope. Called them and was like "I'm moving in next week to [address]" and they were like "Okay, we'll start the meter on that date and send you a monthly bill" and I was like "thanks bye" and they were like "k bye."

I have never had to pay a deposit for utilities. I have lived in Cincinnati, OH - Omaha, NE - and Des Moines, IA.

Guess it depends on your credit.

many years ago, I paid one of those deposits and quickly forgot about it. A year later, things were really in the crapper. I was majorly depressed, underemployed, mostly bad news.
I get the mail and here is the $90.00 deposit back, with fair interest. It was so out of the blue, it felt like free money:)

Many utilities require this. How much they require and from who varies greatly by locality. I assume that credit rating and weather you're the property owner or not matters. Now that they can't easily shut people off in the winter, they seem to require more as winter approaches to start service.
