when you first put the system together...

when you first put it together...should u put the mobo in, then install CPU/HSF, cards, HD, etc?

Or, mount the HD/HSF before putting the mobo in...and going ahead and putting the HD's and stuff into the case b4 the mobo?

There is no right or wrong. I put my CPU/HSF and memory in before putting the board in the case then add cards then drives.

I usually put the CPU and memory on first. Then I'll install the mobo. After that I connect all drives, and then I install all cards. I guess you can do it in any order, but it's much easier to put the CPU on before you put in the mobo.

ok 🙂

if u put the CPU/HSF on first, will the moving/installing of mobo make the HSF "unhappy"? (like is it gonna put it off balance...? i doubt it, as these things have like 20 lb grips, but u never know)

I usually put the hs/f on first. I then do the video card, memory, CDrom, and drives. Once windows is in I add the pci cards 1 by 1 to ensure trouble free installation, probably because I had the whole via/sblive problems.

Just don't use the mobo as a frisbee and there should be no problem with it moving around at all.

Usually this order:

1) Mount Motherboard on MB tray.
2) Mount CPU, HSF, and Memory on MB.
3) Connect IDE, and Floppy cables to the motherboard (or make this step 5.5)
4) Mount HDs and other drives in case.
5) Install MB/MB tray.
6) Connect PS cable.
7) Connection IDE, floppy, and power cables to drives.
8) Put in the ISA/PCI/AGP cards.
9) etc....

agreed

Cpu, HSF and memory first, then install the motherboard. Put in the video card, and see if it'll post. If it does, you're off to the races, and you can start adding the other stuff. It sucks to put everything together and then find out it won't post.

I've been hearing some horror stories lately about people cracking their thunderbirds when they are putting the HSF on it...you might want to check into that, especially if you are using a heavy copper heatsink.

I like thorins response...For number 9 I usually just install the vid card and make sure it posts...then I install the ata100 controller card and do my install and then continue one by one entering each individual card watching for any problems or conflicts...

I like pulling the HD cage, before putting the motherboard in. Gives you extra room, in most cases, and makes it easier to mount the HD's. Putting the CPU/HSF on the motherboard before putting it in the case is also easier on you.

and i imagine u stay grounded during the entire procedure...yes? (even when u install CPU/HSF on mobo...right?)

also, my HSF is a GlobalWin WBK38. Im considering getting a non-conductive shim...i wouldnt want to crack the freakin core hehe

thanks for all the responses...ill b sure to come back with any other questions i might have 🙂
