When you find something, turn it over or leave a note?

Someone left a pair of oakley sunglasses at the computer station I'm using right now. Should I just hand them over to the help desk or leave contact info for them?

The reason I ask is because I found out that if the original owner doesn't claim stuff at the lost and found, they auction it off later.

Yeah once I found a wedding ring at a supermarket :Q and I just handed it over to a manager. In retrospect, I probably should have just left a phone number.
