What do you do to keep yourself going???

I just came back from jogging. I've never been a running type of person, and I've been lacking excersice for a while, so I started feeling really sick inside after a short while. As I kept myself running, I thought about this: When you feel like you've reached your limit, be it from running, staying up to finish homework, lifting weights, or keep standing with a hand on a car (hehe :)), and you feel that you've really exhausted all your physical/mental/whatever strength, how do you push yourself to keep going, to put out more than you have??

How do you motivate yourself? Do you keep thinking about the goal, or the reward?? Do you think of situations where your determination will be needed?? Do you imagine having to defend people you love?? Do you try to forget the current situation??

I'm sincerely curious. Thanks!!

Just like Happy Gilmore, I think of my own "happy" place.

Seriously, meditation helps me quite a bit. I used to do the reward bit, but it can get kind of obsessive. Meditation keeps your mind sane.

How could you meditate while jogging? I too have been facing this problem when I run on the treadmill. I get so bored running on it, that 2 minutes seems like forever! How can I keep myself running on the treadmill for alteast 10mins? I see ppl at the gym, mostly older people, who run on the treadmill for like 30mins!

How do they do it?

In many difficult situations I try to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Doing the best job I can do (whether it's in sports, school work, etc.), is my key motivation. The reward (winning a game, getting a decent grade) is just secondary. The most important thing for me, in my mind, is knowing that I did the best job I can do. In some cases, those "rewards" may not turn out the way I want them to.

Determination should always be used, daily.

Yes.

<< Do you try to forget the current situation?? >>

If it's something that requires a lot of hours of work, work that leads late into the night, my mind goes blank...and that's when the adrenaline kicks in.

madIndian, try running OUTSIDE! Treadmills are incredibly boring. Run outside and keep running further away until you're exhausted. Then, you have to run back. Works for me!

Also, if you hate running for a long time, then try a series of short (400-800meter) sprints.

I look at it this way - The only person that's gonna suffer from me not continuing on is me. If I want to suceed, I'm the only one that's going to get me there.

I wake up every day feeling like sh!t. Seriously. But then I look outside, see that it's a beautiful day. I think of my friends, and realize how good they are to me. I think of myself, what I have to live for. Those three things, among others, are great motivation for me.

Alcohol helps too :p (seriously), but that's a whole different story.

now that the weather is warmer, I'll try my best to jog outside. You do mean jogging right, or when you say 'run', u mean run as fast as you can for as long as you can?

I usually try the treadmill in the winter, cause here in canada, you only get a few months a year to run outside!

Think of all the hot babes you can flirt with once you're fit...

...or think of the better performance in bed you'll give your partner if you're already married/steady....

thanks for the responses guys!

to add a few more thoughts:

-Another method I've used is remembering times when I've held on and pushed myself beyond my abilities, and finally come through.

-In addition to the more petty "struggles", consider something greater, like having the will to survive a POW camp, or fighting (figuratively or literally) for something you believe in for a long time, especially when others despise you for it, or hanging on a cliff with your fingers waiting for someone to come by, etc... When I think of hard struggles like these, with no apparent end, I really think I lack the determination or mental toughness (at least currently) to keep fighting day after day.

Just fyi, if you haven't been exercising, don't push yourself too hard. It's not good for you. Ease into it, definately don't make yourself sick. :Q

As for your question, I'm not sure what drives me other than me. I focus on the goal, and then even higher. Whether I can reach it or not, I try.

Advice from a runner man. Ease into it or you'll be racked with injuries. Hip pointers, ankle, knees. It'll all hurt sooner or later if you don't ease into and don't stretch properly before and after you run. Get a good pair of running shoes too. Not some place like Big5 or Sportsmart. If you're really going to be into running, go to a local shoe store and get some professional help about what kind of shoe is for you. Expect to spend at least 60 bucks for a lower end shoe. About 80-100 for a good shoe.

I use all the problems in my life to motivate me. If there are things that get you down, or there are things that you have no control over in life...you can always take it out by going to the gym.
