When you feel down, why do you feel better when you buy stuff?

it's stuff you normally would not get.

ok, i understand about a food/drug/alcohol binge. You're taking stuff into the body which has a chemical reaction.

but why do you feel better after a shopping binge?
 
it probably releases a chemical like reaction in your brain similair to a drug reaction but a LOT more subtle. I know what you're talking about cause I get it too.
 
I got one of these yesterday, and it made me feel much better for some reason.....

Of course my other phone was dead after we got caught in a thunderstorm out at Furman watching the fireworks show so I've been unable to tell who's calling or get text messages (display went out), which wasn't all that bad after I think about it. The peace and quiet was kinda nice.
 
It just gives you a distraction so that you have a new toy to play with, and you're not thinking about whatever was bothering you while you're trying out the new Xbox 360 (or whatever).
 
Last time I was depressed I went out and bought a PS2 and SOCOM 3. It actually helped alot. 😛
 
I like buying stuff for other people...I'm weird like that. If I had $1 Million...I would probably spend 3/4 of it on other people 😱
 
Hmm, I always get depressed because I spent money 😛. Except when I spend it on stuff for me, then it's good.

right...so you all are telling me when you get that new *insert object from your hobby here* in the mail you're not like "SWEET!"

I can't think of anytime when i have gotten something i've saved my cash for that i wasn't happy about it...what the hell is the point in you buying anything then if it doesnt bring you some sort of false happiness...

I think for someone to deny that when they got a newer faster car, newer faster computer etc that they were not happier because of it is complete BS. It doesnt mean you are materialistic, to an extent of course, it just means you ENJOY your LIFE and your HOBBIES....

Because you are inherently unhappy with your life and hope that adding something new, no matter how small or trivial, will suddenly make your life different or better. The feeling goes away when you realize that your life is the same with or without whatever you just purchased.

well, I like spending it on other people, but I also don't like getting taken advantage of due to that fact. I dont neccessarily ask or expect anything in return, its just always a really nice thing =D
