It wasn't long ago that cremation was considered an oddity. In 1963, only 4
percent of American mourners were opting for it over burial. Today, 26
percent of all people who die are cremated. California has the nation's
ninth-highest cremation rate at 47 percent. Hawaii has the highest with 60
percent, followed by Nevada with 59 percent and Washington with 57 percent.
The lowest cremation rate in the country belongs to Alabama with 5 percent.
