When you burn something in effigy does that mean you are wishing DEATH UPON IT?

Angry Pakistani Muslims chant slogans after setting on fire the effigy of Pope Benedict XVI during a rally to condemn Pope's remarks, Saturday, in Karachi, Pakistan. (AP/Adnan Ali)

The whole Arab world is trapped ni mental and spiritual bondage.. they are repressed every minute of their natural lives by the domination of their "religious leaders" ... They lack the ability to use a mirror or to use any free-thinking due to their birth bondage to the myths

In reply to the topic title itself. I believe it is an expression of what you would do if the man was standing in front of you.

I agree with that.

I don't see what all the hub-bub is about but people are dying so therefore the Pope should be more careful in what he says, though I tend to agree with him on this issue.

OBL has religious permission to kill 10 million Americans, doesn't sound like the "religion of peace" to me.

The reaction of the Islamic world merely proves the Pope to be right. Muslims are doing this because they want a fight.

Where is the person who accuses us people who dare say bad things about Muslims of us wanting a holy war? It seems these Muslims or their leaders are the ones who are overreacting to everything, simply daring us civilized folk into doing something drastic.

who that guy in the silly hat? people actually listen to what he has to say?

and to the title, of course not. there are a few ppl i'd burn in effigy, but it'd just be an expression of frustration and wishing to strip them of their power. but yes to many it would mean death.

I see it as another way they can stir up their base and retain power, similar to Bush and his "these folks want to kill your family".

Discussion about wife beating (transcript)

Quoted from transcript:

Dr. Ibrahim Elias, a lawyer: ... The man is the guardian in his home, he is the judge, and of better judgment.
...
Al-Shazli There are many cases of people, including Arabs, where the wife has better judgment.

Elias I am speaking as a rule.

Al-Shazli Excuse me for a moment, if we accept everything in our lives as a given, we will never make progress. I'm usually neutral but there is no one here to help me, so let's discuss this?

Elias I am neutral?

Al-Shazli You claim that as a rule, the man is of better judgment?

Elias Allah claims this.

Seems like they are pretty much stuck in the past, restrained by ideas written in a book over one thousand years ago.

EDIT: well, at least enough of them are stuck in the past, to hold back everyone else.
