Hey
I used to breathe the wrong way as well and couldnt do it -
It is acually your diaphragm I believe and it is the correct way to breath
Be patient and work on it
A good exercise - relax on your back with a book on your belly and watch it rise as you breath in until you can do it -
dont force it just relax your body completely and watch the book rise and fall

I can push my stomach out without breathing. They are two completely unrelated things to me.

I've heard there are some people who can breathe in and out at the same time. Like those hippies and africans that play those big long tubes. The can somehow blow out with their mouth and breathe in through their nose at the same time.

I not only can do it, i MUST do it. Puffing out your chest is incorrect breathing technique. You're diaphram is supposed to move down (hence stomach out) when you breathe in.

they take in air then fill their mouth with air while breathing out, then they breath in through their nose while expelling the air in their mouth.

lots of people do this

Uhh... they are trying to get you to use your diaphram more that just using your intercostal and accessory muscles. Unless you have some wierd disease, which you would know by now, you should be able to do it just fine. Do you have any gastro problems? distention? herniation? Why are you doing the rehabilation?

its called circular breathing
there was a guy in my section that could do it. he could hold a tone for as long as he wanted and its not common.

and yes, i breathe with my stomach.
use your diaphragm, a previous poster thought it was the correct way and ive heard the same thing.

like some previous posters, they tell me its the proper way. it allows for greater expansion of the lungs. if i lay on my back, i can get my stomach to move rather than my chest, but when im standing up straight, my stomach cannot move further than its normal position.

i had an operation on my lungs cause they collapsed. my left side is fully inflated now, but the right side still has a slight collapse. they left a tube in me and this rehab just speeds the inflating process.
