It's normal. It's their way of defining themselves. You have to understand their last name and their marital status defines their identity, followed only by how many decorative trinkets (kids) they have.

I've dated a lot of divorced chics.
Once they are married their idenity is their last name. Once that is gone they have no real identity, no self. So they invent the self by picking a last name that feels good.
