When Windows XP boots up (fresh start) the desktop appears and then it just sits there for 10-15 seconds ... before it slowly loads the programs from the startup folder and the registry-run programs.

Why? What does it do while it sits there?

And this happens on every WinXP machine I know ... !

I believe it is part of Microsoft's efforts to make it look like it boots faster than previous OSs, if you measure from boot to "desktop appeared".

If you have one or more network cards that are not connected to a network or one that is connected to a broadband modem, here's what you can do to make Windows XP load faster.

Go into Network Conections, open the Properties page for the connection to your DSL modem, uncheck every item under 'This connection uses the following items' in the General tab.

Do this for any other network connections that are not used.

Let me know if this helps.

??
You absolutely NEED TCP/IP and you should have QoS enabled with it set to 0 % in the Policy Editor ...
Now what else should I disable?
And for my (rarely) used LAN I also need the other settings enabled so what should I disable?

I want the damn os to load everything before it hits my desktop for christ sakes.
ME TOO!!!
What is especially annoying is if you don't realize it's doing this and try to connect to the internet over you start menue ... the "Connect to" Drop down menue opens, you try to click ... and nothing happens ... you only have the open drop down menue staying on your desktop until you log off and on again! Annoying as hell!

Seems like there is nothing we can do about it!

Well, I use hibernation allmost all the time and there this doesn't happen.

Trust me, for the NIC that's used for your DSL modem, disable everything including TCP/IP and QoS. And for your PPPoE connection, uncheck everything except TCP/IP and QoS. If you have any other NICs that are not used, disable them in device manager or remove them physically. This will make Windows load faster.

My system takes 45 seconds to load. Starting from after the POST sequence until every start up programs (icq, antivirus, firewall, msn, etc.) has loaded.

i am pretty sure ryeboy has it right....this happened to me and it was all due to the NIC trying to get its DHCP address
