DVD drives have been around for quite awhile now, so when are we gonna start seeing DVD-ROM software? Right now there is a LITTLE bit, but all of that is also available on CD. I think the infiltration of CD-RW has slowed down alot of vendors from including a DVD drive..so, when do you guys think the majority of software will emerge on the DVD instead of the CD, much like how it happened from floppy-cd way back when?

I asked this a while ago and everyone told me it was to expensive for software developers to release DVD's.. Guess they cost 3X as much.
I though t would be a good idea to prevent piracy, how many poeple have dvd recorders in the home.

I'm actaully surprised that more vendors don't offer their softare titles on DVD-ROM, since it would be an effective copy-protection method...

pretty much every computer has a cd-rom now, but not all have dvd-roms...

hence, they keep them on cds.
soon, i'm sure when dvds get as prevalent as cd-roms, they'll release them then..

but then again, everyone will have a dvd-rw by then.

Is there any software or games that really need that amount of space on one disc. It is probably cheaper for them to just use say two cds rather than use one dvd that they will only be using up maybe 1/6 th of.

Baldursgate2 is 4 cd's, Diablo2 was 3 and many more new games are multi cd.

If you'll remember back a few years ago to when CD-ROMs were first coming out (and the best way to get one was to buy a Sound Blaster 16 multimedia package - the sound card controlled the CD-ROM). Most any software you were to buy came both with floppy disks as well as CD-ROMs. There's no reason why the same thing can't happen today.

Well 4 cds still only covers like what, 1/4 of a dvd or half of a one sided one? How much do dvd-r discs cost right now anyway, for good quality, like $30 for a one sided or something, or are they cheaper now?

the license fees on dvds are a lot higher, plus the printing cost is higher as well.
