It seems like 6800GT's have been holding at around 280+ for a very long time now. I guess that's good news for people who grabbed one a while back but I'm kinda hoping to get something decent to upgrade my 9800Pro and here 2 years after I bought the 9800Pro for 200, there really isn't anything out there substantially faster at the 200$ price-point...

200 right now will get you a 6800 or an X800Pro. Both cards are 12 pipes and not gonna last for 2 years of new games like my 9800 Pro has. Anyone else a little dissappointed at this? I think I'm gonna try and limp along on the 9800 until UT3 comes out and see what I need to play it decently...

Don't recommend the GTO, need an agp card.

Is this for pci-e? If yes, and you're not afraid to mess around with the card, a bios-flashed and overclocked connect3d x800gto will blow away either the 6800gt or the x800xl for about $180.

Edit: but in case you just gotta have a 6800gt, I predict it will go for around $200 in a few months when it becomes 2 years old - that's what happened last gen to the 9800p.

It just seems like the last gen cards have held their value much longer then previous cards (excepting the 9800XT/5950U type cards) and non of the midrange stuff out right now is significantly faster (i mean like 2X or better like the X800XL/6800GT cards are) then a 9800 Pro...

You can't really expect 2x performance every generation. The 6800's and x800's were beasts compared to the fx's and 9800's. It gave unrealistic expectations when the 7800's came out.

On a side note, you can always check out refurbs and FS/FT cards.

With 7800 GT's being available for $300 after rebate and with 6800 GT's (in PCI-e) going for $270 I can't think of any reason at all to purchase a 6800 GT or a 6800 Ultra. Heck, the Ultras are more expensive than the 7800 GT's (!!!). I guess the retailers are counting on unsophisticated consumers who heard that the 6800 GT or Ultra were good cards to purchase them at their hyper-inflated prices. (Hey, it seems to work for the bricks 'n' mortar stores where the prices are double what they are online and where the value-for-your-money is halved.)

Yeah--the 6800 GT should go for $200 in PCI-e now and the Ultra for $250. I hope a bunch of greedy retailers are left holding their overpriced 6800 GTs and Ultras as they continue to lose value. (Of course, some dummies will buy them at the over-inflated prices--I guess that's what the retailers are counting on. I bet they are selling them at those prices; Just look at what happens on eBay.)

whats probably happening is the 6800gt/ultras are drying up as more stuff is moving ot the 7800 series, esspically snice the 7800gs is coming out. as there are less of the chips the manufactures stop making cards and stop offering major price cuts unless they have way too many. therefore keeping prices high even though there something new and better.

nvidia never seems to bargain bin their former top end cards like ATI did with the 9800 Pro, instead they simply stop the production and leave it to the vendors to clear out the old stock. Pretty much works like michal said.

What I can't understand, though, is why people are still buying the cards at those over-inflated prices. Someone must be making a purchase now and then. Low supply is fine and all, but if no one purchases a card in low supply because it's overpriced it doesn't do a retailer any good to sit on the cards unless they're hanging on to them as museum pieces; some idiots must be buying the cards at those prices.

Personally, I'd get a 6800gt for $280 over some of the ATI cards because of Shader model 3.
But if thats not a big deal to you, don't spend the money on a 6800gt.
Since you're running in AGP, a 6800nu would do you well, since there's a chance to unlock some pipes on it.

I vaguely recall a thread in here late last week about a new midrange card based on the mobile 6800ultra chipset to be released in the next 3 or 4 weeks? Price point was around $250 which means probably $200-$230 street after the initial wave of interest wanes.

$50 more gets you 7800GT which blows that 6800GT out of the water... no question there about which way to go imho.

Quote from NV rep:

"When we release our 512mb 7800 GTX our 6800 series should drop another $100 street"

theres a question when the 7800 is not an option.

im hoping the 6800's will drop in price soon too. its time to get rid of my 9800pro.

Then it is fairly clear cut that an ATI card is a better option for the price. 6800GT isn't really that awesome anymore...
