It seems like we're stuck at 500gb right now. I am still waiting for something larger. I hate having 4 hard drives in my computer.

750 was announced recently.

I'd say 1TB withn 18 Mos, at the outside.

It's all relative. Why do you need 4 x 500gb hard drives? Answer that and you will see a need for 4 x 750gb and 4 x 1TB, etc. The problem with the new size is that it's prohibitively expensive. Here's hoping that it drives down the cost of the 500gb drives. :)

Like So said, 750 have just been announced. Hopefully 1TB drives will come out soon. I'll probably get 4 750s, but if 1TB drives come out by the end of the year, I'll get 4 of those instead. :)

750gb drives are already pre-selling for $500, which isn't too bad if you really need the space (especially professionally).

I shudder to think at defrag times though :Q

The only reason I would get 750GB + Drives

1. I have a PowerVault 220S - 14 146GB SCSI Drives = 2TB
Runs on dual 500W PSU

2. That hooks into a PowerEdge 2500 Server - 2 Boot 36GB Drives
Runs on Triple 250W PSU

By switching to 3 1TB or 4 750GB drives, I'll reduce over all noise & space and most important power draw.

It's probably not as fast as SCSI but I dont even use my SCSI for speed, only storage.

I can still unload my PowerVault 220 unit on ebay for close to 3k maybe 3.5K, so this is a savings for me.

Well, have you ever done video editing? I did a 5 minute music video for fun last year and the raw footage filled up my entire 40 gig video drive. If you're working on a serious family movie or something, the more space, the better. Plus I like to archive project materials in case I want to make changes later on or put the materials to good use elsewhere...

Ain't it amazing how short-lived information is these days...

Shouldn't be long. I'd say less than a year as all it takes is to add perp recording to an existing 500GB design. The Seagate 750 is basically their 400GB unit with perp recording.

Their new 15k.5 SCSI drive with perp recording is hitting over 100MB/sec true - 125 on the outer cylinders.

or recording hdtv ts streams. it'll r@pe your harddrive. 1tb drives will definetly be necessary for hd type dvr time shifting/recording. no doubt about it.
