When will there be a clear winner in the hi def format war?

if hd-dvd wins i'll be going with a 360 and either buy a stand alone hd dvd player or get the add-on. If blu ray wins ill just get a ps3. However my pappy is gonna go 1/2's with me on a console. Im really trying to decide here. What makes it even worse is my dad works with a projection screen company, and got a hi def projector at a good price. We've been using this thing with like a screen size of at the very least 4ft x 4ft. Do you think we'll see a big difference between 1080i and 1080p? I heard people cant dell the difference between the two, but that is probably because they are viewing on a much smalle screen. Reason i ask is because i heard 360 only does games in 1080i max.

Neither is going to win anytime soon.

There's not much of a difference between 1080i and 1080p.

My advice: Buy a console based on games and not on the format.

Why let the format war hold up your console decision? Buy a console based on the games. By the time there is a clear winner in the format war, you'll be able to get a high def player for $100 - because until that happens neither will sell in large quantities. The small number of installed HDTVs will further delay widespread adoption of either format.

With his two console choices he is already disregarding your sage advice.

😀

I love the Wii, but its game selection is still lacking, and it's too early to tell if it will have a better selection than Gamecube. Although it would be a good an inexpensive system to hold him over until the format war is settled. 😉

Wii and DVD player. Wii will win the next gen console war and DVD will dominate HD DVD and Blueray for another 5 years.
