As I was sitting in the theater yesterday I wondered how kick ass movies on the big screen would be on an LCD screen. Do you guys think this will ever happen in the near future (next 5-10 years)?

One would have to imagine a tremendous breakthrough in the price for something like that to happen. My completely off guess would be that something slightly more exotic, like those carbon-based flexible displays would be more likey...

Cost will be to much for many years to come.

And plus we all know they won't use it since we will have the holodeck before those types of screens are used. :D

MUTS is LED. Coherent rasters exist as well but operational costs are staggering as well as the paperwork required, etc.

an lcd or plasma screen that big would be way too expensive. it wouldn't even be worth it to the theatre owners. too much cost with not enough change in return.

When they arent afraid of asshole moviegoers breaking their equipment.
I.E. never in America, and not for a long time in other parts of the world.

Those projectors are kept in locked rooms for a reason, and a big white sheet is relatively inexpensive to replace.

We wouldn't need LCD or plasma screen theaters if all the theaters just switched to digital.

no real point to go directview until there is something that can actually drive that kind of thing

for a 60' screen you would need a display that is several million x several million pixels

otherwise there would be no advantage to using it over a projector

and there is definitely a point that your eyes won't be able to tell the difference anymore (dependent on how far you sit of course)

only until oled takes off.
aren't those supposed to get to the point where they can be sprayed on, have a ridiculously high contrast ratio, and support really high resolutions?

but i'd say 25 years or so

i remember seeing something in the discovery channel (or was it history channel?) where they are comming out with a screen thats paper thing.. u will be able to fold/roll it and what not.... they also said it would be cheap and practical in the next 20 years....

also, in the same program, the same technology could be used so a whole wall can be a screen... pretty cool...

Thats not practical. There's nothing wrong with projection... LCD isnt going to look any better. If anything it would look worse. Much worse. You'd see the pixels.

Digital projection is the alternative and that is the future of cinema.

You won't see the pixels if they can shoot movies at billion megapixels.

I think virtually all theaters are still based on film...
