When will the game-currency deals go away?

I want to buy a new Nvidia card to upgrade my desktop a tad, but good grief I cannot get over this useless in-game currency pitch. I actively avoid freemium games and most popular games in general. Sure, it's a "gift," but lets get real here. There are no such things as gifts. This is factored into the cost of the product and I want no part in buying ~game currency~.

Help! Don't make me buy ATI!

I'll tell you when I make the board of directors for Nvidia.

In all seriousness, if you're not going to play the games on the AMD deal, it's the same thing anyway... just sell the codes on ebay and call it a discount with a bit of work involved.

The cards will not get any cheaper even if those deals go away. They are just a little added bonus by the game makers that want more people playing their games. AMD gives the actual games.

Out of curiosity, if you do not play any popular games, why do you need a faster card? Most other games are not nearly as demanding.

I would prefer to get actual games, my grief is with freemium games which are just terrible in my opinion. AMD giving actual games is nice, but I don't want an AMD/ATI card.

There are plenty of non-popular games that are reasonably demanding. ;) My current card is ancient.

Why would you not want an AMD/ATI card? Both camps have driver issues so that should not be an excuse.

are you going multi gpu? if not, amd offer the best value overall.

7950 is the sweet spot.

only reason to even consider nvidia is for multi gpu.

Because the PC and gaming world aren't everything?

I'm going to take a hugeee assumption, and going by OP's avatar and name, that he runs Linux.

And guess what, AMD drivers absolutely suck for Linux. Intel is best, but Intel doesn't make dedicated GPUs. So, there is your one reason why someone could actually want a Nvidia card over AMD. That being said, I'm sure AMD drivers have improved since the last time I tried it, but I remember the days of driver wrapping everything.

Actually there are a few more reasons why one would want an Nvidia reason over an AMD card, but that's a tired argument and doesn't have to do with the OP.

Back to OP... the freemium games are definitely a nicer deal, but the currency bundles aren't too bad. You can probably get $40 for the $150 credit pretty fast on ebay. Not as nice as the game bundles but still good. But no one knows how long these promotions are going to last besides the companies themselves.

AMD has fully up to date drivers for linux. Last time I used them they worked fine. That was over the summer.

The stigma is hard to shake still, I suppose. I haven't tried it recently enough, but I remember hearing of the linux community still avoiding AMD.

You guys understand that Planet side and worlds of tanks are HUGE. World of tanks is one of the largest online games out there right now. Hawken is expected to also be huge when it gets out of beta.

so.. Nvidia may not give you a couple of games that are hot right now, but for a whole lot of people that in game credit is HUGE. FYI $50 to planetside will still be worth $50 in 6 months. You can already get $30 deals on crysis.

For those of us that don't play the game, the value of the credit diminishes with every new code on ebay... and the abundance of code saturates the market anyway.

It is still a nice touch for those who do play the game, and I'm sure there are quite a few happy WoTers/PS2ers/Hawkers...

Deals are total crap, not surprised you don't want them. I got two with my current cards and managed to sell the WoT codes here in FS&T before my thread got locked. (didn't know the TOS said you couldn't sell them lol)

Still have the PS2 and Hawken codes. WoT is okay, probably why they sold, but PS2 is mediocre and Hawken is terrible garbage.

That compared to Crysis 3, Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider... yeah. I got C3 & Infinite with my 7950 and the games were the deciding factor in buying the card. Knew I would get both at release, so it was like getting the MSI TF3 7950 for $200, couldn't pass that up.

*chuckles* I'm guessing the last time you used AMD/ATI on linux was about the time AMD bought ATI?

The drivers then for linux was a mess; a giant pain in the butt.......Nvidia's drivers weren't all that great either.

Intel's drivers for Linux......*shutters* they aren't the best far from it. Nvidia won't do open source code for the drivers; guess who has......

took them a few years...but AMD yep - its not complete fun and games with AMD drivers but its soooo much better that it was; and if there is an issue; I can recompile; easily......unlike Nvidia or Intel.....;)

Have you played Planetside 2 lately? Sony's having massive issues with the game; so massive that players have quit in large numbers; so large and so quickly they've been forced to merge a lot of servers.

Between the lag and game breaking balance issues.......People aren't staying around.

Hawken sucks balls compared to Mechwarrior Online - and Mechwarrior Online has its own issues......

WoT - liked it for a little while until I found if you don't buy the golden bullets....you're not going to get anywhere......

WoT is doing decently - but its also a pay to win game which is started to grind on people......we'll see if they can intergrate WoA into WoT.....

I'd have to disagree based on my own personal preference.

Hawken is a good twitch based FPS based on Mechs, Mechwarrior is the same game I played on Gamestorm nearly 20 years ago, just retextured. It's slower, more meticulous and calculated.

Nothing wrong with either, I just like more skill based twitch games.

As a fan, I'm just happy there is a choice. Though I think Hawken could use some more weapon/mech types.

I don't think I've bought a video card yet that offered even 1 free game. My 2 GTX 460 1GB could have included, say, Battlefield 2 and Crysis: Warhead. That would have been nice.

I don't know what you're talking about wrt. Intel Video Drivers, apart from the horrible PowerVR Variants they're using in some Atoms the code's all in the kernel, libdrm, xf86-video-intel and mesa and is rather trivial to compile (as much as any backend in mesa anyway).

As of late I believe Intel's been a bit faster at publicly releasing ISA documentation than AMD as well, ISTR being able to download the Ivy Bridge IGD docs before what AMD released for Southern Islands (and IB came out 3 months after SI)
