When will the desktop PCs be truly wireless?

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's tired of the cable mess behind the computer. Every "wireless" device still has a receiver that you have to plug into a USB port.

When will we see a standard adopted for all peripherals and then have that standard built-in on the motherboard so there are truly no cables outside of the case? I know Bluetooth is out there, but will it ever become a standard to the point where it's built-in?

Here's how I imagine buying my LCD monitor in the near future:
Bring it home. Unpack it. Plug it into the electrical outlet. That's it! The computer automatically detects its presence and starts sending video signal to it.
Same thing goes for my keyboard/mouse, joystick, digital camera, webcam, headphones, router, speakers etc.

Is something like this coming anytime soon?

Probably not. Not all of it anway.
Many new Macs have built in bluetooth for keyboards and mice. Wifi (802.11) is also getting much more common in desktop systems.
I don't know about wireless video though. http://anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=1577&p=2]Single-link DVI has a bandwidth of 1.65Gbps. [/url] That's large, especially when considering that that's over 30x faster than 802.11g. While this kind of bandwidth may be slightly more feasable over short range (~1m), I still don't see it happening any time too soon.

im sure power would be pretty tricky

there are wireless receivers for mice and keyboard that are just a unit that plug into the port, no wire to the unit
and there are wireless usb senders for all the other peripherals

Get integrate blue tooth in your computer and you don't need those USB dongles. Some mobos have it, some laptops have it, and there are add in cards.

BTW, I don't know if wireless anything has enough bandwidth for even short range high resolution tranmissions. Hmm, well there is over the air HDTV signals, what kind of transmitter would someone need to transmit an HDTV signal about 10 feet?

Oh, and no wireless transmission of power. Cables could be combined though, say have a video cable that's also a power cable or something.

Looks like you are looking at some kind of "network over the power lines" - once you have some kind of transmission over the power lines, you just plug in a device and it is connected 😀
I wonder, there are any keyboard/mouses that work over TCP/IP? That would be great, except when having multiple computers on the same power line 🙁

If you combine power and data cables you will get massive interference.

There already are ways to send TCP/IP traffic over power lines, normal power lines. I've seen stuff at CompUSA that let you set up a home network over an electric circuit. I've also seen stuff on the Internet where several companies are trying to make broadband over power lines work.

I think he means something like what Apple did in the past, sending power as well as the video signal to the monitor through one cord. This works basically with 2 separate cords bundled together. Helps cable management.

I'm talking more about bundling the cables together in a sheathing, not using the same wires for both. I think Apple already bundles the power and video cable into one cord.

When will they be wireless?
Simple - when the powers that be determine that there's a lot of money to be made in doing so.

It'd take a decent amount of R&D to both strap a wireless transponder onto everything and then to make it cheap enough to compete with wired devices.

When will Desktops be wireless?

when the FCC lets them...

Video/power are the only two issues everything else is wireless.

Power: Hydrogen powered pc... Maybe if we can figure out the H2O to O2 + H equation.

Video: Like i said above FCC need to open up higher freq...

Let's see, my keyboard, mouse and internet access are already wireless and I just help my bud pick out a wireless printer for his daughter's dorm room. I could have wireless speakers if I really wanted them. I was happy to get the wire off the mouse, but I don't really mind the wires that are left. If I did, I'd get a laptop.

For power I say a TV show about new idea for homes. One of those idea was wireless power, there would be special ribbion in your wall that could transmitte power to this pad things. Its still very young, I don't expect to see it for another 7 years. Here is a like concept, but I don't know if its the same company.

The major problem mixing this tech with PCs is HDDs. They are using inductive currents to transfer power just like any transformer does. Get that amount of magnetism next to a HDD... "where did my data go". Although I think all of us have heard of the microwaves sent across a room to light a light bulb experiment. Who knows maybe in 7 years all HDD will be solid state (truly hard but no longer disks).
