When will Opteron prices drop?

I've read maybe when the next Opterons come out, the current ones will drop in price. Will it be too far down the road to matter? Maybe the current ones will be obsolete when the new ones come out?

When do you think the current Opterons (namely 165) drop?

Well, if Conroe really spanks it, AMD would be foolish to keep its' price high. I believe they'll want to move the Opterons, so prices will have to fall........

Well on the desktop Conroe may spank it, yes. But it's a server part according to their roadmap and when you get into 2S it's close and 4S it's not getting spanked at all. So I don't think we'll see the prices on the 1S parts (socket 939 or 940) dropping much. They haven't budged at all since the price cuts while the 1meg L2 cache Athlon 64's have fallen through the floor - 4000+ is $139 at newegg.com and the 3700+ is $97 at mwave.com.

wolfman, I think the OP was referring to s939 Opterons which do not appear in dual and quad CPU configurations.

I doubt their prices will go down much at all. They were never really meant for the general retail market anyway. I doubt AMD will be releasing any more Opterons on their desktop platform (AM2 or AM3).

I don't remember where I read it, but AMD is going to continue an Opteron line on AM2 for the workstation market.

Don't ask me when it'll be released or for a link...I don't know and I don't have one, respectively :p

For some reason I doubt we're gonna see 1S Opterons in mass anymore. Theres no money to be made, as people would just go Core2 or Woodcrest. 2S is more competitive, but not so much. I forsee much of the Opteron supply being diverted to 4S/8S, where Woodcrest has not infiltrated and will not infiltrate until at least the year end. Profit margins are also higher in 2S/4S/8S (particularily 4S/8S).

So, IMO, its logical that we will see a very tight supply of 1xx Opterons (because competition will be stiff) and even they will only be available for Tier1/2 OEMs.

I wouldn't worry about the Opteron 165/170. Just get a X2 3800+ ($150~). The extra cache of the 165 doesn't benefit the K8 architecture much anyway. I'm assuming you're looking for a Skt 939 upgrade......
