One of the obstacles has been getting a pure white LED light. There are some LED that are pretty close but the cost is really high. The other approach is to use LED of different colors to make a pure white. That cost a lot as well since these are smd LED that have to be manufactured with that purpose in mind.
From what I have seen of white light LED don't expect to see them everywhere in LCD displays for quite a bit, and then the price is going to be high.

You don't need it to be pure. It just needs to be better than CCFL.
