when will LED backlit LCD's become mainstream?

probably a couple years. they're just now popping up in netbooks and laptops, it'll probably be a while before they can put that tech into a large lcd without a large cost increase.

samsung announced a 23" model for 400 bucks but afaik has yet to release it.

You're probably looking at least 12 to 15 months (minimum) before LED backlit screens will move away from the Apple only monitors to something where all of the major LCD manufacturers will have competing products. I'd say it would be closer to 18 months before we'll get the good prices (and variety) of LCD monitors that we have.

One of the obstacles has been getting a pure white LED light. There are some LED that are pretty close but the cost is really high. The other approach is to use LED of different colors to make a pure white. That cost a lot as well since these are smd LED that have to be manufactured with that purpose in mind.

From what I have seen of white light LED don't expect to see them everywhere in LCD displays for quite a bit, and then the price is going to be high.

You don't need it to be pure. It just needs to be better than CCFL.

You don't need it to be pure. It just needs to be better than CCFL.

You need a neutral color light, too much of either spectrum and it will effect color.
Considering the current cheap LED are in the 2700K range, you would not want that in a display.

Eventually I'm sure it'll happen. LED LCD TVs are already appearing....it may be a good number of years until it'll reach mainstream status though.

there are led backlights..
and there are rgb led backlights.
rgb is the superior one. simply having led is not enough. well its enough for laptops for power savings but for desktop its not enough, it might not even be any better quality wise. it depends on how its implemented as well, if its just a regular backlight without the ability to control brightness by region it won't be superior. and of course grid loads of rgb leds are going to cost more. just because a screen claims led doesnt mean much. so dont be fooled.

hm seems to be a tn panel, which tends to be bad for image quality. so i guess its mostly about power saving for that panel. step in the right direction, but not quite there yet.
