All I really want is something capable of 480p in the 20-25 inch range. I see some 20-21 inch LCD TV's for $800-1500... but if I'm going to spend that much, I may as well spend another $1000 and get a 55-65 inch Projection HDTV.

Is there anything available for under $500 that can do at least 480p?

eh 19" lcd + 200 dollar hdtv card is a real cheap hdtv.
480p is not hd
things will get cheaper eventually i guess, hopefully those chinese brands keep putting pressure on the rest. maybe not cheaper plasma or lcd..hard to make. those lcd rear projection and tubes might go down i bet. after all, the off brand dvd players have pushed 480p output down to what? 30 bux? unthinkable a few years ago. liteon dvd set top recorders are like 200 now.

Can a HDTV tuner card + CRT + antenna combo function as a HDTV?
Do I need any extra equipment?

Pretty much.

If you're going to record a lot of HDTV stuff you might consider a D-VHS deck.

Thanks.
Does this work with satellite-based HD as well?

Depends what you mean by satellite. If you're talking about DirectTV/Dish Network, then no. If you're talking about free-to-air, then you'll need a card that supports DVB-S, such as the Hauppauge WinTV-Nexus.

just buy a tube. fantastic picture, and reasonable value.
I think I am going to sell my 47 and get a 34" tube widescreen TV.

As CraigRT states, go for a tube based HDTV.

My local Walmart was selling a 32" Philips closeout for $400. They also have a nice Sanyo 30" widescreen set for ~$750.

Samsung TXN2745FP. If you get an older one, there is a service menu that will allow you to enable 1080i (supposedly has been "fixed" by Samsung in newer versions though). If you don't get one with the option, you still get a nice EDTV (480p) for a reasonable price. I've yet to enable 1080i on my set as I don't have a 1080i source at the moment.

Note: there are some convergence issues with these sets. I had to buy and return 2 before I got one with good geometry/convergence (thank you CC for free delivery/return pickups). I tweaked the settings using the service menu and now it looks great.

EDIT: These are 4:3 sets, BTW.
