I thought it was supposed to be after the full week of mourning which has been over for a while. However, I too have seen lots of flags that are still half mast...

why do people care so much?

one of our past presidents die so they put the flags at half mast for a month...the man was the leader of our country

does this small tribute effect your day to day life? can you not get your work done because the flags are lowered?

Maybe the Navy will, since they fly theirs at half "mast". The rest of us land lubbers fly ours at half "staff" and we're not getting the day off. :D;)

It should be noted that flags fly at half mast on ships, because ships have a mast. On land they fly at half staff. Just a tidbit of information going into the holiday weekend.

uhhh.. usually when a flag goes to half mast it stays at half mast for 30 days

Flag Rules and Regulations

i believe it's the president who says how long the flags should remain at half mast

AND even if we DO have 4th of July with a flag at half mast it is to honor a president of this country and his life

The flag shall be flown at half-staff thirty days from the death of the President or a former President; ten days from the day of death of the Vice President, the Chief Justice or a retired Chief Justice of the United States, or the Speaker of the House of Representatives; from the day of death until interment of an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a Secretary of an executive or military department, a former Vice President, or the Governor of a State, territory, or possession; and on the day of death and the following day for a Member of Congress. As used in this subsection -
(1) the term 'half-staff' means the position of the flag when it is one-half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff;
(2) the term 'executive or military department' means any agency listed under sections 101 and 102 of title 5; and
(3) the term 'Member of Congress' means a Senator, a Representative, a Delegate, or the Resident Commissioner from Puerto Rico.

From the US Code

I had no idea it was 30 days for a former president. Thanks for the info. I was wondering why it was still lowered too since i thought it was one week after the end of the funeral events.

Thank you for the quote, Crucial. I was wondering where 30 days came from. I didn't know it was actually writen down. It was also interesting to find out about the US Code. I had never heard of that before, either. I bookmarked it for later perusing to see what other interesting tidbits are contained in it.

I remember someone here bitching that every classroom had an American flag in it.

Still shaking head in disbelief.

Eh, I can live with it at half staff....just thought it was a shorter period. I do think it's a bunch of crap that the gov't shut down for the day. Even state workers here in KANSAS got off. WTF do they have to do with anything? If it was so important that gov't workers get off, then it should have been declared a national day or mourning and everryone given the day off.
