When will flags return to full mast?

Does this mean that when Clinton "goes", we are going to have a big state funeral and 30 days of mourning too? And the people will whine about it too?

yeah, its pretty standard one month when a president dies.

President Eisenhower issued a proclamation in 1954 to standardize the mourning period for US leaders.

A president gets 30 days.
A vice president, chief justice or speaker of the house gets 10 days.
Lesser figures are honored up until they're planted in the ground.

You guys know what I find odd? The fact that when a Pres dies the "whole country mourns" and flags go half-staff. When hundreds of soldiers die each day in Iraq and the rest of the middle-east saving our sorry @$$es, nobody notices and the flag stays where it always is. Shouldn't the people keeping our freedom get a little respect and honor?

Just invest in a half-sized flag pole and run it at full staff, it'd be cheaper.

True, but since we KNOW that people are dying, should we not honor them as we do the President? I just think it's a bit crazy that we honor the war maker more than the people fighting the war.

As harsh as it may sound, it wouldn't serve well to honor them the same as a President. Memorial Day is hte day to remember all the soldiers who fought for our country.

Take this as an example. If a stranger randomly told you that a one Sergeant Jake Stanley died, you may feel brief sorrow, but ultimately it would pass without much consequence, as you did not know of him. Now, if that same person told you that President Bill Clinton (barring all political feelings) died, it would hit you more heavily, as this is a man who was in the public spotlight for 8 years, and you feel as though you know much about him. It may not be right, but it all has to do with perspective. Presidents, and high ranking public servants, are more well known than the individual soldier. You don't mourn for the death of someone in Texas who you know nothing about, do you?
