I am guessing that DirectX 10 cards will show up at the same time as Windows Vista, early next year. The Microsoft delays should give the card people time to get everything right.

What I am wondering is what kind of price ranges will the cards have. Will we just see them first at the very high end costing $500 or so, or will we see them across the whole market? Anyone remember when and how the DirectX 9 cards came out?

I am wondering if I should buy a cheap PCI-e card now (say $50) and then buy the $150+ card when DirectX 10 cards hits.

My computer has built in 6100, which is weak. but still much much better than the Geforce 4 MX I came from. Long term I see myself going SLI so I am not sure I want to spend $150 on a 7600GT and then have to get a new card next spring in order to get the most out of the new games.

Crysis looks unbelievable and I think you really will need DirectX10 to get the most out of the game. Although Crytek did a great job with Farcry and its ability to "down play" to the older cards.

Yeah, buy that one cheap 6600 vanilla at newegg for $59 bucks (or you could buy a 7300GS/GT, not sure how much they cost). But that's what I think.

If you believe the rumours then we could very well see DX10 cards from both ATI and Nvidia before Vista and DX10 actually appear, especially if(when) Vista gets delayed again. No problem there though as they'll run DX9 games absolutely fine until Vista is released.
