When will DDR be dirt cheap again?

OS

Lifer

Right now, DDR is more than two times as much as SDRAM per MB for the same brand/same clockrate. I remember DDR used to be something like 25 dollars for 256 megs of namebrand stuff? When will it be that cheap again? Don't memory prices usually collapse around spring time?

I need to buy a new mobo/cpu and I'm trying to decide if/when to get more memory to go with it.

Man, I?d like to know the same thing. It?s usually a Taiwan earthquake that jacks up RAM prices, but when was the last one? The slower speed (2100) seem to be coming down a little in price.

yeah I want to get an SDR/DDR mobo and was thinking about just buying crucial CL2 PC133 SDRAM instead of DDR if prices don't drop.

I mean, DDR costs twice as much as SDR but it's not really twice as fast as SDR.

It's already starting to drop. Crucial PC2700 DDR333 @ 512MB has come down from $ 196.39 to $140.39 - that's $ 56 in two weeks.

Excellent! Hopefully if I get a new system next year, the memory prices will be even less then. 🙂

Not sure if you should count on DDR on ever being as dirt cheap as it used to be. Back in the day (about 1 year 3 mos. ago) when VIA KT266A the only platform that supported DDR was AMD 760 and SiS735, and Pentium 4s using DDR had not showed up in force yet, in fact neither had AMD platforms. To make a long story short, once people other than DIY gamers running Athlons started using DDR the price skyrocketing. Now no one uses SDRAM or RDRAM so those prices are comparatively lower.

I hope it falls too. My comp could use more/faster/brand name DDR. My KingMax PC2700 that isn't even stable at PC2100... got nuthin.

I've been hoping for the same thing. Bought a stick of 512MB Micron 2100 for $120 in October. Then when I went to buy another stick December 1st, it was $160...

i think an earthquake hit taiwan pretty recently, though im not quite sure

im building my first pc in summer, so will RAM prices' average drop by then?

check the hot deals forum... it's cheap every week... of course not as cheap as $22 bucks for 256MB of PNY PC-2700 like I got 2 months ago but pretty cheap 😛 enough bragging.

I doubt it will ever be THAT low again.
You have to understand that for example Infineon sold RAM modules below cost - they can't do that for long.

I'd expect RAM to come down a little bit more - and essentially, you will get larger amounts for the same price in the future.

DDR is the most popular and the xmas season is the busiest for computer sellers/builders so that the popular ram gets very rare, thus expensive.

Sdram on the other hand isn't used much anymore and mostly its old stock or end of run clearing out thus cheaper.

More demand, more expensive.

Memory usually settles down in january pricewise.

Sdram will become more expensive as it becomes rarer. DDR will drop in price by the new year.

The only time DDR was so cheap (Crucial was selling them at around $30 per 256mb stick) was when everybody was ramping up production because of an anticipated surge in demand which never really materialized. Instead came the technology bust that left a glut of memory inventory that was hard to get rid off unless sold dirt cheap.

It'll drop way down when Double-pumped DDR is available - when the next wonderous thing comes out.🙂

I always say you just have to be a deal hawk... you can always make something happen, though it might have to include a complicated PM... you gotta work for your savings 🙂
