read above ^^.

supposedly amd is going to release chips with sse3 instructions. that should help them in many places where intel is still winning. any word on when those chips will be out?

zebo wrote somewhere that the next winchestor stepping should be out soon, with starined silicon :) and I'm going to guess SSE3 as well.

On the performance part, there are very few (if any) applications that take advantage of SSE3, or at least thats how I understood it.

iirc, i thought sse3 would help amd in some productivity apps where intel usually wins in.

The apps have to be specifically optimized to use the new SSE3 instructions, stickybytes. Athlon 64s already have SSE2, which is now becoming a little more common in those apps that Intel typically dominates in.
