When will 16X dual layer DVD burners hit the shelves?

I'm looking to buy a DVD burner but I don't know if I want to buy now, or wait until later.

How long does it take to burn a full 9GB DVD at 4X or 6X?

Edit:

And if I were to get a burner now, which should I get?

Pioneer DVR-109?
NEC 3502A?

It will be a while before the 16x DL drives are available, if ever.
NEC has released the 3540 series, which offer 8X DL support - no info as to when they'll be available in the US, but judging from the plummeting price of the 3520A, it should be sometime soon.

Wait, if you can.

DL DVD recorders have been out for awhile albeit slow 2.5X to 6X. The biggest drawback right now is the price of the DL media. DL Media is priced between $5.00 to $8.00 a piece! Compare to a $0.35 single layer media, DL has yet to hit mainstream.

When they do they will be obsolete. We will have Blu-Ray and/or HD-DVD.
That's the primary reason I'm not buying standard DVD movies right now.

It's not like they're going to be super-high quality if current movies are put on HD DVD. If the source isn't super-high res, it won't matter what the media is. You just might wind up with fewer compression artifacts.

most movies are mastered in high definition before they are reduced in quality for dvd video. So there is already a big catalog of movies that can be released in HD.
When you look at the back of a dvd movie case, alot of them will say mastered in HD.

Exactly. That's what I'm waiting for.

Well, at least you know the Star Wars trilogy won't be released on HD soon. Look how long it took them to even put out the DVD editions. I think Lucas is waiting to edit in Jar Jar binks in place of some of the wierd alien in the trash bin that Luke, Leia and Han get's trapped in before releasing it in HD.

And change the story, such that the explaination for them surviving and escaping the trash compactor, was due to Jar-Jar's inherent latent Jedi powers? (Especially over mechanical things?) Hmm. Sounds like typical revisionist Lucas! 😛
