when water 'goes down the wrong pipe' where does it end up?

so i was drinking some water when it went 'down the rong pipe' and into my lungs. where does that water go? does it eventually just diffuse into lung tissue? leak out somewhere? cough it up over time?

Usually you cough most or all of it up. A little bit of moisture in your lungs isn't a bad thing though...on a humid day, all the water in the air is the reason why it's hard to breathe regularly during outdoor exercise...too much water, not enough dry air.

it gets reabsorbed. if it is irritating enough it can get dispelled as an aerosol by coughing. that is why people with pneuomonia are constantly coughing, because the build-up of liquid in their lungs is irritating their lungs and preventing oxygen intake.

Water is a cumulative poison - it collects in the lungs every time that happens, and brings you that much closer to death. Eventually, you just spontaneously drown.

Don't swallow chewing gum, either.

The reason people with pneumonia are constantly coughing is because of the mucous buildup, not liquids!
