When watching the sun set into the sea

Does the sunset begin when the sun "touches" the sea (horizon) or does the sunset begin when the sun "disappears" below the sea (horizon)?

Of course it would be nice to actually see it but tonight we had a raging thunderstorm instead.

"Watch the sunset" - implies you start watching it before it completely disappears.. preferrably before it even touches the horizon for full effect.

when the sky becomes calm, and colors appear if by magic someone has painted water-colory streaks across the heavens... when the sun touches the horizon.

Well I notice the night mode on the navigation terminal begins and a bell rings and it says SUNSET! - BEGIN NIGHT TIME MODE! but it seems kind of dark outside. The software has the exact time of sunset for given location programmed. Well it's cloudy (duh!) but I will have to try this when the sky is clear. Of course whenever the perfect time to do this is about to occur I have to be somewhere else inside. :|

when it touches the horizon for the sky effect, but the actual "sunset" is when it disappears and the colors turn into the night sky. for the latter, the effect is better if the moon is already up.

Tried to find a definition on NOAA's site but didn't.

To me sunset is a little while before the sun touches the horizon.

What I like is gazing at the surface of the sea on a warm full moon night. Squint a little, & zillions of flecks of moonlight reflected off the ocean look like tiny living beings racing around.
