I turn off this machine (main rig) every night. My other PC (download machine) was last turned off by a power outage about 25 days ago.

I turned it off about 2 weeks ago to clean it out thoroughly (as in: the fans, the cooling element, the power supply, etc). Other than that: power failure a few months ago.

When your on a T1 its hard to shut them off, i have three boxes in my dorm, one being a laptop, (the only one that gets shut off regularly) The other two are running windows 2000 server and i just built another to run Mandrake, Win2kbox has been on seems like its been on since i moved in, but im sure there was a reboot somewhere :D linux box is running 2 weeks strong... see how long she holds it.

Last night. I was putting in my new hard drive. Before that, it was when I took it home for Thanksgiving. Other than that, it's on all the time unless the power goes out for longer than my UPS can handle or I have to reboot for some reason or another.

Last night -- I turn it off every night. The hard drive is rather loud, I can sleep with it on, but if I can do something to make the room quieter, I do.

This thing has an off switch?

j/k, I turned it off for the Thanks Giving but b4 that i couldn't tell ya.

Mine is quite loud but the noise does bother me as much as the lights. I have a full window on on side w/ a blue ColdCathode and 4 blue LED fans. I had to turn the CC off because it was too bright.

Webserver says: 12:27am up 70 days, 4:48, 6 users, load average: 0.08, 0.03, 0.00

Laptop is a bit over 6 days, and this machine should be at about a day or two.

I turn it off every night because I am sensative to noise when falling asleep unless I am EXTREMELY tired or drunk.

Let's see - main rig (Tbird 1.3 running XP) was off for a few days over Thanksgiving break (I went home and just decided to turn it off); prior to that it had been up 2 weeks straight without a reboot. It hadn't really been turned off for quite a while - probably August or September.

My "server" rig (BP6 dual Celly's also running XP) was off both for Thanksgiving and the weekend before - somehow one of the CPU hsf's popped right off!! No idea how - my roommate got scared by the temp alarm beeping & shut it off :) Somehow the cpu didn't cook itself, or so it seems.

Now I just got my laptop back from a friend, so that makes 3 comps in my room! But I've only got 1 monitor, and its LCD, and I turn it off every night, so that saves on power consumption ;)

Yea, you can turn these things off??? And why???

Mine was off about 15 days ago.. I shut it down to put my new Santa Cruz in it.. Prior to that, it was up for 45days straight without a reboot, and still running stable..

I love XP.. and even though my comp is slow.. its extremly stable.. Hardware hasnt crashed once in the last year..

Edit: other then the occasional hardware switch - case cleaning or very rare power outage (twice a year maybe).. but comp has been up for almost 2 years straight.

i've had particularly bad luck this past month (multiple reformat/reinstalls), but from the summer back about a year before the summer, I ran pretty much 24/7 for months on end.

My laptop is always off unless I'm actually using it. My other rigs stay on all the time unless:

1. I want to make a change to the system that requires a reboot or shutdown (kernel upgrade, BIOS tweak, internal hardware upgrade, and so on)
2. An app brings the system down (there isn't much that can kill Linux, but WINE is notorious for causing lockups and trashed screens, and if VMware gets an attitude it can hose the system too)
3. The CPU overheats (and when you overclock as much as I do, that's not a rare occurance)
4. The power goes out (my UPS died long ago)
5. I screw something up

My server currently has a pathetic 18 day 3:50 uptime. I tried to mount my backup hard drive, but had forgotten to put it in the usb 2.0 housing before doing so. Result: zombie mount process taking up 100% of the CPU.:frown:

Regularly every 2-3 weeks for LAN parties...other than that, it's on since the day I build 'em. :) Same goes for all of my computers...hmm...I should update my rigs page. :D
