What if the OP is walking with another dude? Does it mean he loves or cares deeply for the other guy if he's on the street side?
Pshaw! Poppycock and folderol! Violence, most specifically the ever present hint of violence is the alpha male's stock in trade. It is how he became the alpha male, and it is how he maintains his rank.
gaidensensei assumes correctly. Most people are right handed. Left-handed-ness is a trait of the weak, the sly, the duplicitous . . . yea, verily, the sinister.
Think, ProcessedBeefBoy, think! A right thinking, right hand using Alpha Male will carry his sword on his left side. It is to protect said sword from sinister swiping that he stations himself on the left.
I don't know about this.
Even the lions allow the beta lions to travel without threat. Yes, the swift sword of justice must be applied when necessary, but in a public situation walking on an ordinary occasion the hierarchy has already been established.

in every military I've ever heard of, the "place of honor" is on the right. Your sword reference is a bit misguided, according to fable; the place of honor is on the right because when drawing a sword or pistol, the guy on the right is significantly more likely to cut/shoot the guy on the left. We wouldn't want the colonel cutting up the general.

The real question is, who gives a flying fuck? I sure dont.
The gentleman always walks on the street side with the woman on the left.
