When USSC Chief Justice Rehnquist steps down, who would you like to see replace him?

Not saying that Rehnquist's retirement is imminent or anything, just speculating a bit for fun...

Since the Chief should have a brain and a heart, that leaves out Scalia & Thomas.
No way a Republican President would nominate a Democrat either, so that eliminates Breyer & Ginsburg.
Stevens is too old. O'Connor & Kennedy aren't strong enough.

Maybe Bush jr will have a case of daddy deja vu & nominate Souter, but pigs would fly first.
Although Souter would be the best choice.

Just keep hoping that no one dies/steps down before the 2004 elections.

I think the obvious choice would be Bubba Clinton. We need a disbarred lawyer as the Chief Justice!

I think it comes down to Kennedy or Scalia. My vote is for Kennedy who is the more moderate of the two, but I wouldn't be surprised if Scalia is Chief Justice.

I'm sick and tired of lawyers running things. We need someone down-to-earth, articulate, conservative in politics, liberal in brain-power, with a heart and soul....only one choice for me: Rush Limbaugh.

Second choice...Bluefront. heh

How about anyone who's not quite so full of himself.

Rehnquist gave the fall convocation at my university during my Sophomore year. He had to be the most boring person I've ever heard speak. Then again, in terms of convocations, he was competing with James Earl Jones and Maya Angelou*.

*Like her political views or not, she's an excellent speaker.

Who the hell voted for Clarence Thomas? That guy might be the most empty-headed Supreme Court justice in the last century. Not only is he laughably underqualified, he pretty much just votes with Scalia on every issue, in every case, without apparently giving any consideration of his own whatsoever.

I have never been impressed by Thomas. He asks few if any questions during the oral arguments and bases his decisions on the other Justices' questions and the lawyers' responses to those questions. Well he really doesn't base his decisions on what he hears in oral arguments, because he votes with Scalia so much of the time. I listened to the audio of the arguments of Bush v. Gore during the election fiasco, and Thomas did not ask one question.

I would like to see Jesse Jackson oversee the highest court in the land.

are you alright in the head?

Why, no sir. Mr. Jackson would make a fantabuloustic Chief Justice.
Maybe when Al Sharpton becomes President.
