when to tip delivery guys ?

Say.. Seaman's furniture will be delivering a dining room set (table + china/buffet). They waived $99 delivery charge as a special to us when we bought it, but a 3rd party company is doing the delivery. Do I have to tip them or is the supposed $99 good enough to warrant no tip?

Another situation, ... Sony is delivering a widescreen tv... that I got through my aunt's employee discount. I don't know if delivery charges applied. Do I tip them ?

If so, do I tip per person or just give it to 1 person... and how much for each situation, in your opinion ?
 
no tipping unless its food and then I'm usually pretty cheap but wouldnt be if I had money. But I still wouldnt tip unless it was food.
 
I use this general rule of thumb. Tip in proportion to how much you appreciate the service you have been provided. I tip very generously to a waitress who is polite and courteous to me and my friends if we've been taking up her table for hours with only coffee to show for our troubles(I've been known to leave 20 dollars for a 1.50 cup of coffee). If the delivery person delivers your goods in a kind and courteous manner and places it somewhere conveniently and does so in an orderly fashion, I appreciate the work and will tip. If he drops the furniture on my doorstep and tells me to sign a form, no tip. I take the term gratuity a little literally I think.
 
I have gotten furniture from them before (ahh, 2 leather sofas with recliners built-in, quick nice). I did not tip the delivery guys at all.

Nor when I got my Sony Wega delivered from OneCall.com via some professional freight company.

But when I moved, I did tip the movers. And when I get food, I tip them as well.
 
I have never heard of this concept of tipping delivery people before, except for food of course.

Maybe I'm thinking about it because Asian furniture companies often don't charge for delivery...

I did give the Levitz delivery guys $5 each for a few sofas... but they were really nice and even cleaned up after themselves. I didn't mind giving that tip.
 
tip when you have money in your pocket that you need to get rid of before it explodes. Food people get tips of course, no one else.

Anyone else noticed this trend of cashiers leaving tip jars? I should leave a jar by my desk at work then. No one should get tipped for doing their job. If it's an industry where i know they get lower pay(waiters) because tips are expected, then that's the only time.

Free delivery = you have already been charged for it in the price of the furniture
