When to throw in the towel

So when do you just throw in the towel on a car and call it dead? I just spend $1500 on thermostat/radiator/timing belt/water pump and some more NOT at the dealer. It has the typical fun A4 leaks, but overall is still decent. Drives nice but I am sure suspension will be on its way out soon. So when you just cut and run? Its paid off and I REALLY dont want another car payment, but I also dont want to spend $1500 every three months or so as a suprise. Any suggestions? Thanks!

that is typical maint. you do on most german cars at 100k+ miles...so sounds about right.

what kind of leaks are we talking?

Unless you really want to buy a new (or used) car, I'd say hold on to it until it dies or the maintenance bills exceed the cost of a new (or used) car. If you have a good idea of what you would buy should you have to replace your car (price range, anyway) that would help you figure it out.

As long as you don't find yourself battling electrical gremlins. Stuff like pumps, hoses, belts, suspension dampers are meant to be replaceable wear items. None of this ought to be a surprise.

haha I'm in the same boat, but I've got a cheaper car than you (99 civic). I was about to buy a WRX yesterday (getting a killer deal) but I can't stop thinking it's "smarter" to drive a beater. Good on gas, no payments, cheap insurance...

...only problem with the beater is I look like a poor mofo lol. Oh well.

I used to look at people with expensive cars as wealthy, now I look at them & shake my head watching the depreciation numbers roll past...

Compromise & run your Civic another 2 years, you should make a habit of owning your cars for at least 10 years.
