When your drill bit is lodged 120 feet below ground surface (bgs) because you were not calculating right and you ended up putting in bentonite chips and water into the hollow stem auger only to find that your drillbit is now encased in bentonite cement.

oh such fun at the field. Thank god it wasnt my fault, but i feel sorry for the guy... everything was going good until this thing happened. 1.5 hrs after the incident, they managed to bang out the bit with hydraulic punch and reverse up the bit to finish installing of the probes.

He thought he was at 115 feet, actually he was at 120feet. So when he pulled up he was at the wrong level and since he had already put in the bentonite and water into the hole to close up the top of the sand portion (where the probe sits).

if you dont know.. bentonite chips = dry, water reactive, and hardens.

Last week we were loading Debian from a USB flash drive onto an embedded system and fsck would bitch and moan every time. Finally ended up destroying the USB drive.

That's when you say fsck!

no.. we are testing if the site's PCE contamination has reached groundwater. Cause it it has and if its above MCL (Maximum contamination levels) then that has to be remediated too. As it stands the site needs to be remediated. It used to be a former factory in the past. Today its an empty asphalt lot with cars parked on it. The property owner wants to build a car dealership on it. But before any of that can be done, it has to be cleaned up.
The site is be characterized right now. Once that is done, then remediation can begin by excavating the soil or putting in an Soil Vapor Extraction system (a giant vacuum system) that just pulls things up from the soil and then runs it through filters packs to neutralize it.

That call will be made by the consultant, the owner and us the state of California.

You guys are the ones putting in the test wells around the site?

I did HAZ-MAT clean up for a few years when crane work was slow.

There's one (actually more than one, but...) subdivision in Union City, (IIRC, it was pretty nice the one time I drove through) that ought to be re-named Love Canal West because of the high levels of contaminants that were in the soil where it's built on. You couldn't have GIVEN me a house on that site if I had to live in it for even one day.

The guy at my lab used to do that sort of work.

Me, I say FSCK when I manage to crack one of the diamonds in the diamond-anvil cell. Thankfully, that does NOT come out of my paycheck.
