When to replace printer drum?

I'm using a Brother HL-5470DW which has seperate toner cartridge and drum. The docs say replace drum at about 30k copies and Brother's nagware is bothering me to replace it now. I have nearly 32,000 copies but the output looks perfectly fine to me.

Am I hurting anything by continuing to print using the old drum? My feeling is keep using it until the print quality degrades noticeably-is that the way to go?

Yup. It will warn you well before it actually wears out. Since it can go from perfect to streaky and splotchy in like 10 pages, you probably want to go ahead and order one, though. Sitting on a shelf won't hurt it.
