When to delete old partition?

I just bought and installed a new hard drive that I'm using as my new boot/OS drive. I kept my old XP install on the other hard drive in case there were something wrong with the new drive.

My question is how long would you recommend keeping the old XP install before reformating that drive?

If there were going to be a problem with my drive, I assume it would either be apparent out of the box or within the first week. What do you guys think?

Why not just back up what ever you need to back up and format the old drive and then keep a small portion of it for further back up for the next time you need to reinstall? If there was anything majorly wrong with ur new HDD that would stop it from operating at all, I would think it would be pretty appearant right away. What drive did you get?

**EDIT- Also, how long has it been in and running?

I kept everything because I want to have something that I can boot in case my new drive failed. At this point, it would probably make sense to just back-up what I need and re-format. This may be a bit easier said than done though because I have a lot of files (around 80 gigs worth). So, I can't really back them up easily, I need to move them to my new drive.

My new drive is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 ST3250823AS 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache Serial ATA150 Hard Drive that I got from Newegg. I found it to be the best SATA drive that I could get for the money. I've had it running for two days now without any problems.

Unless you need storage space, just keep the old hard drive as it is. This will be like you emergency back up. Now if you need storage space, then go ahead and format the old hdd and start using it as storage. If you are really that paranoid, highly recommend getting a 3rd hdd as a mirror or image of the system drive. I doubt there is anybody in here who can pinpoint the day when a hdd will go down on you.

you should see any problems if you haven't seen any in the first week but it would be nice to keep a backup just in case something happens to your current running version of xp. it's always good to be safe

Ok, I'm ready to reformat my old OS drive. The XP Disk Management tool won't let me do this, so I assume that I need to use the Windows XP disc to reformat the drive. I don't want to install a copy of XP on it though, is this a problem?

Also, will my boot file be adjusted automatically to no longer detect this old OS install? It's difficult to find information about my particular situation. Thanks for any help.
