Here's the deal: I'm about to build my first system but I don't need it done for another month or so. My plan was to wait till after Christmas/New Year's and order everything then. But all the emails from NewEgg are starting to get to me and I was wondering if waiting is the right thing from the price perspective. So my question is: are there (from past experience) going to be as good deals after January 1st?

That $40 gift card for $20 was a good deal. There seems to be one good deal a week. I would just keep watching and chances are you'll see a great deal on one or two key components before the end of 2011.

Order your components between now and january picking up any good deals you see. Be aware HDD prices are through the roof at the moment and although they are supposed to be coming down if you can wait until they are back to "normal" you will save some decent $. Maybe just install a small SSD for now and wait for the HDD later.

It will be interesting to see what NE and other stores do after the holidays. A lot businesses do 50% of their sales between the Veteran Day and New Year's holidays.

Hardware you're considering today will most likely always be cheaper two months from now.

you say a month, so wanting it mid Jan then?

I ask as were I am, then now would be the best time. Not because of sales, but availability. Most wholesalers and some retailers close from just after chrismas till late Jan so getting parts becomes not possible. Even stock on hand was purcased by most in mid Dec so any good parts I find are never in stock after about half way through Dec.

If the stores you want to deal with always have stock then this is not a issue for you to worry about.

Never seen that issue with Newegg. If anything, right now is the worst time in terms of having the items you want in stock. The increased demand really puts a strain on their JIT system.

I would not do that because every order kicks off its own 30 day return window. If you buy a part now but don't get around to building the system until mid-January, you might be stuck doing a manufacturer RMA instead of a Newegg one. Most all manufacturer's take a week or more for an RMA whereas Newegg will get you sorted in days, no questions asked.
