When to buy new comp?

Basically, when would be the right time to build a comp. I never built one before and am new around here.

Mostly i want to know about timing: I consider waiting until Christmas or early next year so the release of barton and hammer(maybe ill wait that long) will drop the cpu prices. Is it worth the wait to buy ddr400? Would the ati 9700 drop to an affordable price? Any tips on when to buy certain parts? Any advice will be appreciated.

is ddr400 worth it as opposed to ddr333? doubt it.. you wouldn't notice the difference, i think. i have ddr266 and soon after i bought my rig, ddr333 came out. I could care less, because my pc is fast enough for anything i need to do. In fact, after I bought my pc, I didn't really keep up with new technology for a while, because.. well.. why bother?
ati 9700 will probably drop to a competitive price based on what nvidia does with their new gpu's.
it's up to you.. no one can tell you WHEN to buy a pc, but I've found that parts become cheaper when their competitors put out newer and more $$$ parts, but that wait might (and usually is) long.

If you wait, by then there will be something else new on the horizon to wait for. So is the way in the PC world. If you wait for the 'next best thing', you will always be waiting. Now is a pretty good time, new CPU's and vid cards were just released, so the old stuff dropped in price. Word.

I agree, if you wait for the next best thing, you'll be waiting a long, long time. There is always something better coming out. You just need to buy something and be happy with it, and make sure you have room for upgrades. That's about the best you can do.

You'll always be able to upgrade your video card and CPU (unless they change the specs).

It's always easier when you already have a system. What I do is make sure I have things that will last for a while, like case, monitor, and hard drives. I don?t mind upgrading my motherboard for a new CPU or newly supported developed RAM.

If you?re not looking for the fastest items, it?ll probably be best to buy now or soon. Things seem to be low (except for certain RAM, but that is to be expected).

If you?re looking to buy the fastest hardware, you might want to wait until the end of this year. New items will be coming out (or should be out by then), and will probably be cheaper than some think.
