Going to spend $800-1000 on a new system. I live in Boston and have easy access to Microcenter. Or I'l use Newegg. It is built around the three main components:

-Core i7-920 CPU ($199 @ Microcenter, $288 @ NewEgg)
-Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R Mobo OR MSI X58 Pro-E board (about $188 at each store)
-Patriot Viper 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) (about $163 at each store)

Should I buy before Christmas or wait until the first or second week in January? It seems like Intel drops their prices in January usually. Thinking I might save some good coin by waiting until after X-mas. What do you think?

If CPU drops are the norm after xmas I too say wait to buy the CPU.

But pick up other components whenever you can. THere are tons of deals going on on newegg all the time. rebates, free shipping, throwing in free hardware

If you hold out until next fall, you'll SAVE a TON of CASH on an i7 920.
SWEET! ;)

Ha ha.... Well guys I just bought the i7-920 locally @ Microcenter for $199. Saved about $90 Vs. Newegg.

Now the only think I'm waiting on literally, is the Intel X-25M G2 HD. It looks like Intel pulled them because of firmware issues (I think). I'm waiting for them to go down a bit in price, perhaps to $250 or so. Even then, I can't build my rig if they are out of stock.

They pulled them because of firmware issues a few months ago. The reason you can't find them now is because everyone is buying them, even at $50 over MSRP. I wouldn't hold my breath for a permanent price cut anytime soon, but keep an eye out and you can find some good deals on em. They normally sell the 160 GB for $589 and the 80 GB for 289 on Newegg, but over Black Friday had em down to $414 and $215 respectively. Might get lucky and find some Christmas deals in the next couple weeks.
