when to buy ATI vid card?

I want to buy a vid card to replace my Radeon 9000. I can only really afford the 9500 Pro right now but I'd rather get something faster to run DOOM III and HL II nice and fast. Is ATI gonna release any new cards soon so that existing prices will drop?

My system is a P4 2.66 Ghz BTW.

the 256mb 9800 should be the only thing out for a while i think. they will probably focus their r&d on the r400, although i hear talk that they might overclock the 9800 and ship it.

Nice system .... try to get a non-pro 9700 for $230 at newegg it will be worth it over a 9500 pro. You can oc em out of the box and are a tad under the performance of a pro ver. Look in my sig and see what I get with a 9500 (non-pro) and think of about 2-3x faster with a 9700. Once u get to the higher res' in doom things get a bit slow eheh

9600 Pro would be a nice replacement fot the 9000 Pro. The price is expected to go down for this card. I plan on getting a 9600 Pro myself as soon as I have the cash for it.

get the sapphire 9700 non pro with the 2.8ns samsung ram for $240 from newegg.com, flash the bios to a retail and you have yourself a PRO!

But you will be cpu limited unless you are running a 3.06 p4.

You are right the 9500 does outperform it, but not by much. I recomended the 9600 since prices are expected to drop (to less than a 9500) and it is physically similar to the 9000 in appearance (no extra power connectors).

u have to remember that u can OC the hell out of the 9600 and it runs faster than the 9500 at that point

Yes, but you can also OC the 9500P, and because of its architecture (twice as many pixel pipes and vertex shaders), a 1MHz core OC on the 9500P is equal to a 2MHz OC on the 9600P.

The 9500P is a slightly better card than the 9600P overall, but both are great cards.
