ReTrumplicans will walk the country.

AZ GOP goes full fascist: Bills to arrest election officials, declare Trump winner by fiat.
1614595604782.png

Every Republican in the Arizona Senate co-sponsored a resolution demanding the Supervisor of Elections for Arizona’s largest county, Maricopa, to be arrested for declaring Joe Biden the winner of the 2020 election and for not complying with their illegal demand to turn over election equipment and mail-in ballots to a Trump-allied firm that promoted false claims about the election. This despite there being no evidence of any fraud except for Trump’s belief that he can never lose.

The election supervisor for Maricopa refused to hand over ballots and equipment, saying the Senate has no authority to ask for that, and that state law forbids him from turning over ballots, and that state law and its contract with its vendors prevent them from turning over tabulation machines. He is also justifiably concerned that giving ballots and machines to a Trump-allied firm that spread misinformation wouldn’t be a good idea.

His county already had two independent, non-partisan audits of the tabulation machines completed, and … big surprise… the election wasn’t fraudulent.

Maricopa County on Tuesday released the results of election audits from two independent auditors it hired to verify that voting machines were not hacked, were not connected to the internet and counted votes properly during the 2020 general election.
The Senate GOP didn’t even want to wait for a judge to rule if their subpoenas were legal, (they aren’t), and tried to have the election officials arrested because Trump didn’t like the results of the election. Fortunately, when it came time for a critical vote on the arrests, one lone republican voted against it, saying he wanted more time. Otherwise, Maricopa officials would be in jail right now for doing their job. That’s where the GOP is right now.

And if that wasn’t bad enough…

Among the 19 bills that are coming that would restrict voting rights for Arizona citizens, there is one that would allow the legislature to declare Trump, assuming he is the GOP nominee in 2024, the winner by fiat, regardless of how Arizona citizens voted.

A Republican lawmaker wants to allow the Arizona Legislature to overturn the results of a presidential election, even after the count is formally certified by the governor and secretary of state — and even after Congress counts the state’s electors.

Are they using a "contempt/obstruction of congress" thing and asking the state attorney general to step in, or are they trying to pass a bill of attainder (which is like, super unconstitutional)?

Link is in the OP. It reads like they're going the way of the attainder.

How the hell is that even constitutional? Like, that should get shot down by the state court in 5 seconds

Talk about a manic panic kneejerk reaction to an election that was proven legitimate every way possible, what these Repubs are doing right there is hilarious in some ways and absolutely terrifying in others.

Looks our conservative run Supreme Court is going to be very busy grinding their way through all of the challenges over those newly minted voter suppression laws those Repub controlled states are going to be legislating to keep themselves in power from a minority party status.

In a perfect world, a couple of the Supremes would switch party affiliation to Democrat. I've seen it happen with more than a few congressmen over the years, really gets so dissatisfied with their party they switch to independent (like Angus King) or just go all the way to Democrat.

Republican control of AZ has been slipping away for a while and could go almost completely in 2022. Crazy desperate behavior is likely to increase exponentially until that happens.

State GOPs seem to go some level of batshit when this goes down. VA is probably a 7 out of 10. GA seems to be cruising at a 5 so far. AZ looking at a 9. TX will go to 15.

GA's a bit higher. The state legislature is considering a bill to restrict Sunday voting in GA....because of mail-in voter fraud concerns. That's right...restricting in-person voting using the mail-in voting fraud lie.

Alright I'll upgrade them to a 6.5 to 7. Might as well hang a sign on the proposed Sunday voting resections as "Black people voting is bad because they they do not vote for us and we would like them not to vote please". I don't expect that to survive.

SCOTUS is about to review a couple of voting rights cases that started before the election. I fully expect the majority to craft a new test that makes it very difficult to bring claims under the voting rights act in the future.

The country's days are numbered. The corrupt are too deeply embedded in the system to every recover to the point that the Constitution is meaningful.
