When the white kids start dying, it's TIME TO TAKE ACTION!

The 21-year-old drove from his Newnan home into the notorious haven for heroin in northwest Atlanta before dawn May 1 looking for a fix. Some time during the night, he pulled over on a side street to shoot up. Quietly and alone, he succumbed to his vice one last time and died of an overdose.

Elliott fits a profile the U.S. Department of Justice found during a 2010 analysis of Atlanta’s drug market: More young Caucasians are traveling from suburban counties into the city to buy heroin. They buy a gram for about $160 and return home to abuse the drug and sell the leftovers, the analysis says.

Three upper-crusty white kids OD = media freakout.

Teenage minorities shooting and stabbing each other with wild abandon (and probably selling the H to the white kids in their spare time) = business as usual.

The media is retarded, been that way for the past ten years I think, prolly more, but I never paid attention to it before then.

...and get off my lawn!

Ooooh someones house is gettin tp'ed now...

One thing is much more common than the other. The news is just focusing on something that is on the rise, rather than repeating the same old story of minorities killing each other.

New stories get peoples attention, old ones don't.

How is this a new story? The same thing has been going on since the 20's and 30's and likely even before then. The real truth of the matter is that white kids dying are more important than minority kids dying.

Just call it what it is. There's always been double standards

My problem with this whole shebang is that the statistic is based on Socio-Economic status + Race. The statistic itself is significant for those of us trying to build good strong healthy middle class+ lives for our kids. This statistic represents a threat that despite our hard work to bring our kids up right, there's a rising trend of these kids going out and getting hardcore dangerous drugs like heroine.

The fact that the trend is white is more a function of there being more Middle-class well brought up white kids than minorities... Any minority parent who is raising there kids the right way should be equally concerned about this trend.

When a guy I went to school with ODed and died at the age of 40 years old (and he is white), it did not make the news. Just another drug head that killed himself.

I think the issue with the article is the kids age, and that he is white. If a 40 year old dies, so what. If a 17 year old dies, they wasted their life and died too young.

There also seems to be a social stigma about race and drugs, which I think is wrong.

Obviously a slow news day in Atlanta. I'm sure the deceased teens' school/community/every teacher/coach he's ever had displayed an outpouring of sympathy for the family, his friends and his dog. The girls from his school wore t-shirts with his name written on it and cried publically, etc.

When an inner-city kid ODs the community doesn't care because it's BAU.

Also, I was the white kid who unfortunately grew up in that inner-city hood. I saw white kids from the other side of the tracks and surrounding tri-state area drive in on a daily basis to cop and head back to party. They stuck out like the proverbial sore thumb as I'm sure this kid did. 25 years later and Nothing Has Changed.

Yeah, it's actually been that way forever, highlight whatever panders for attention. The old saw is that "dog bites man" is not news, but "Man bites dog" is.

With the 24/7 internet, there's just more coverage, especially of the shallow and sensationalist type, than ever before. A stupid article that would have lived for one day and then died in the Chicken Flat Falls Observer is now zomg repeated all across the web one11onewon!

If all minority crime was reported, people would come to the conclusion that minorities create alot of crime. Reporting that fact would result in the news organization being labeled racist. "Why does that newspaper keep talking about minority crime and other incidents? White people cause crime too! That paper is racist."

They have to throw in news about whites to offset that. Its like having the token black guy in a commercial or movie, etc. This is the same concept, just in reverse.
