When the hell is ATI going to slash the price on the 9800pros?

I like to buy slightly older hardware because I'm poor. I want to be able to pick up a R9800pro for under $150 new online, but even those they cards just aren't what the used to be (still great cards, but many more horses can be had for slightly more) and they should be cheaper now. Its a bit frustrating.

Buy one used, there are a ton of geeks upgrading.

Go to the FS/FT forums and make a "WTB 9800 Pro" post.

I got one for around $150 (after rebate) at Circuit City during the after Thanksgiving sale. BTW, I've been annoyed with ATI because the prices are still so high. All they've been doing is releasing unavailable high priced graphic cards for the past 1 or 2 years. The ones that are affordable seem to be nothing more than renamed 8500, 9000, 9200, 9600's etc.

Not gonna happen for the time being. I checked newegg and the prices have gone UP instead of DOWN for 9800 pros. I can't believe a few months ago they were selling for like 175-210. Now they're all 250 dollars. I hope that's just happening for one site.

If the X850s and XLs are actually available, I think we'll see a price drop on the 9800Pros, but they'll go back up again as supply shrinks.

That might be because the production of 9800 Pro's have decreased. Simple supply/demand.

Usually Fry's has a 9800 for 180-200 but today when I checked the paper it was selling for $250. Like Algere said tis probably because of the supply.

I just bought a slightly used, never OC'd card for $140 on the FS/FT forums...and it's still under warrenty. If you can accept buying a used card, you can hit your desired price point.

I dont get Ati either. They are completly ignoring the $200 market.

Most people in the $200 market are not looking to do a full system upgrade. So most people spending $200 on a video card do not have a motherboard which supports PCI Express.

So what does Ati do? Nothing. They just leave you with what they have had. Honestly I think this will hurt Ati. They need something at every tier. This means they need a AGP X700 or something new and nice in that $200 price range.

In fact its really bad right now. If you have a $200 price range on your video card you have one choice. The 6600GT. For price and performance there really is not any other choice. And as the cards come down in price (As the PCI-X ones already have) that will hurt Ati even worse as their 9800 Pro will look even worse at their current prices.

Its sad when you can buy a brand new PCI Express 6600 GT for the same price as a 9800 Pro. The 6600 GT is a far superior card and honestly I cant figure out what Ati is doing. When you compare the performance to the price it really makes you wonder what Ati is thinking.

I'm sure we all know marketing and business more than ATI.

Could it be our little gaming nerd world of $200-$400 AGP cards is a tiny market?

Could it be that ATI is making all it's money in the OEM PCIe, Xbox2, Gamecube2 markets?

Maybe they're trying to clear out the suckers market. Also when you consider that the card was going for like $400 a year and a half a ago, $200 or so seems about right. I doubt we'll be able to buy 6800 Ultras or other top tier cards for $200 in another year.

I am starting to think it would be cheaper to get an X800 at this point. I can't believe I have waited this long for a new ATI card.

it won't. did the geforce 2 ultra go down in price when the gf4ti 4200 was going for 150-170?? no, they just sold out at higher prices.

The X800/XL would be excellent choices if/when they become available.

high end video cards getting too expensive, so most gamers still hang around <$200 budget. then 9800 pro will be the right card, more demand less supple = higher prices

there is a current Hot Deal for $179

And the 9800p is ATI's "new" midrange card . . . . and it is is fairly short supply so the prices will stay around what they are until the NEW cores (r520) are released in a few months. 😉

I get that ATI wants the pro to be midrange. But sorry, its not in the same class as the 6600gt AGP. If they're going to make my pay a $180, I'm just going to scrounge up an extra $20-30 and snag a deal on a the nvidia card. The 9800pro is a good card, but the 6600gt AGP is enough better that I won't even look at it at its current price.

Basically, if I have to break my price point on the new card...I'm going to break it a little more and buy nvidia's new hog.

As for the 'lower supply' assertation...why the hell are they lowering supply? They have NOTHING else to offer to the AGP market. The other theory I can come up with is to push people into buying the newer stuff. But that looks to be a plan that will surely backfire. Nvidia has just plain brought more to the table this time. They've got good cards, cards that thus far seem to be beating ATI's offerings (or are just as good) and they have more available cards actually available. Pushing the consumers forward like that would just push more of them into nvidia's camp.

Maybe this will help explain it.

ATI PLANS TO fight Nvidia's 6600GT with its Radeon 9800PRO cards. Of course we are talking about AGP cards as there is no such thing as 9800PRO PCIe. It's a chimera.

Regardless of ATI's dreams, we know there is a huge shortage of 9800 PRO cards in both shops and through distributors.

Oddly, an Asian source tells us that there's no shortage in Mr Raffle's little colony, Singapore. In fact there appear to be floods of them over there.

Many sources close to ATI and the ones that are actually selling those cards tell us that you can of course place an order but it will take quite a few of what we call in the trade "weeks" before you see the cards.

With 6600GT AGP already available, ATI's partners might be in trouble as they need all the 9800PROs that they can get. Or not get, as is the case. We hope that the situation is going to change but in the last few commercial weeks remaining in this year of delays, things don?t look too bright in the northern hemisphere.

Yields on 9800PRO, after more than a year on market "should" be good but bear in mind that the 9800PRO was once a high end chip and has now been wrenched back to the mainstream.

Usually a graphics card company redesigns a high end core and releases it into the mainstream, but this time ATI just used the same core. That might be the essence of its problem.

We hope that the Rialto ATI bridge to Babylon comes soon, very soon we would suggest. I believe that Rialto can help ATI to make a difference. It might also help its stock price. (ticker: ATIW).

Do what I did and change over to nVidia. I've had enough crap with ATI and their pathetic launch of the X800 cards. No X800 Pros or X800 XTs anywhere, and the X800XT PE is nearly impossible to find (although I did find one and sold it for $640 clean).

ATI lost me and I'm sure they lost alot of other people over this.

Not for people looking for bargain cards- they are PCIE only. How many people have PCIE motherboards? Very few. I'm guessing people looking for bargain cards aren't scrapping their AGP motherboards just so they can buy a X800.

how does nvidia compare to ati in 2d these days?

As always, it depends on the brand. Search the boards for a brand you're interested in (there's a long one about PNY having horrendous 2d quality). Leadtek, for example, has always had good 2d.

I've had great results with ATI'd 2d from my 7200LE onwards...
