When talking to a couple

I just noticed this yesterday. I was at a bar with friends and a couple who know one of my friends was there. The girl started asking me the usual getting-to-know-you,-stranger questions, and I would answer while looking at her, but then the dude would chime in too. So then I got confused and when I was asking questions back, I was looking in between them so as not to discriminate between the two.

My theory is that I was only interested in what the girl had to say but I had to cover that up by treating them as a single being. It was weird.

You divert all of your attention to whom it is that is talking to you, especially if it's a woman.

If you are doing the talking - then do timesharing between the listeners as not to discriminate. Eye contact with each individual is key.

Depends on the topic I guess, but I try to give individuals individual attention.
