When someone says to they use Unix as a file server, what does that mean? Does that mean they are using Samba or something like it to share filesystems so Windows machines can see them?

It could mean they are using samba, or that they have an nfs client installed on their PC.

We use an NFS client to mount unix filesystems to PC's here.

You can use NFS without Samba? Does NFS do the translation from the Unix filesystem to the windows one?
