When someone asks you "Did you get a haircut?" are you supposed to say "Yes"...

...even if the answer is no? I got this question today even though I haven't had a full haircut in four months, and when I responded with the reality of the matter, the person asking just kind of paused for a moment before going onto something else. Is discussing a person's hair kind of like another way of talking about the weather or something, just to get a brief worthless conversation going for the hell of it? I feel like I slighted the person asking in some way.

...clearly you haven't mastered the art of small talk. it's okay, few do.

you are analyzing this way too much. it's either small talk or idle curiosity, doesn't really matter.

Ok, you guys are just too sharp. A while ago this same individual tossed a small object in my direction at a moderate pace and said "Think fast!", and I just watched it fly through the air and hit the ground with no reaction. I'm a Slowpoke. :(

Meh. When people grow up a bit they'll stop doing that.

How would you have responded?

Probably "Ha ha, funny.". But then, I'm nearly bald.

I might go for a veiled TNG reference, when Data's "daughter" is learning motor control and puts her hand up to catch a ball that went past her two seconds ago :) Even if they don't get the reference they might still find it funny. Or not.

Of course, the benefit of discussing it on a forum is that one isn't put on the spot and so can think of a response more easily. In reality I probably would have tried to catch it like a girl and failed.

How would you have responded?

"WHAT IS WRONG WITH ART?"

when in doubt, go dada.

alternatively, tell bad jokes.

helium walks into a bar.
the bartender says "We don't serve your type here!"
helium doesn't react.

If someone asks me if I got a hair cut, my go to response is always:

"Nope, I got all of them cut."

If someone asks if you've had a hair cut you say YES!

You must have lost some weight, or your acne cleared up, or wore some decent clothes for once, or put on some deodorant, or brushed your hair or teeth, etc, etc. Either way, the person noticed an improvement, but obviously didn't know what had improved, so they thought it was your hair.

The only socially acceptable response is to pee in their butt. Gender does not matter here.
