when should ps fan turn off?

Hi guys. First post. Just built a new system. Without going into details about "why", I really want to set up XP power settings in such a way that the system will automatically go to some low power mode after a period of inactivity. My intention is to leave this pc on 24-7, so I really want the low power mode to include no fan operation. Two reasons. First, I don't want to have to open it up every few weeks to blow the dust out. Second, I sit right beside it 40hrs per week working on a separate laptop. Don't want the fan hum boogering up my Pink Floyd.

I had assumed XP "standby" would be the way to go here, and that the ps fan would shut off in "standby". That's not happening.

Questions -
1) Is the ps fan supposed to turn off in standby?
2) Should I be looking at a different power scheme?
3) The MB can accomodate 20 or 24 pin ATX power connector. Same with the ps. Seemed like default was 20, so that's how I connected it. Would switching to 24pin make any difference on the fan issue?
4) Is it even possible to do what I'm asking? Or am I stuck with the fan on at all times (unless I walk up and switch the !@#$ thing completely off)?

Here are the specs -
Asrock A780GMH/128M
Phenom II 550
4G ram
using onboard video - no video card
two 750G WD "green" drive
LG optical drive - basically plain vanilla IDE
Rosewill RP500-2 ps

Pretty sure your only alternative is to buy a fanless power supply like the Silverstone Nightjar....but it would probably be much cheaper to just shut down your computer when not in use.

PSU fans don't suck air in, they blow it out, of course this removal of air from inside the case will be pulling in outside air through other vents in the case...but you can always buy filters for those.

You have to make sure Suspend to RAM (S3) is enabled in your BIOS. Also google USBBIOSx.

You could also look at using hibernation if you still can't get it working.

If you can't work it out, buy a Nexus Value 430. It's as quiet as it gets. You seriously need an anechoid chamber to hear it and your laptop (and CPU heatsink fan?) is most likely louder.

Fanless PSUs are not worth it in my opinion, not with options like this.

Scoop, you're right on target. The annoying hum is actually coming from the CPU fan. Sorry for cranking on the ps discussion.

I dug a little and learned about S1/S3 but haven't got it fixed yet. But I will follow up if necessary in the proper forum (obviously not a ps issue).
